When Peter Levin opened Joe’s Pizza in Ann Arbor, Michigan, he wasn’t just bringing a famous New York slice to town — he was bringing an experience he wished he had during his time at University of Michigan.
Having worked on Saturday Night Live and in the hospitality industry for years, Peter spent time at Joe’s legendary 14th Street location in New York, learning the craft before launching the Ann Arbor shop. “Since 1975, it’s been a celebrity hangout and one of the most well-known slice pizza shops in New York City.”
But running a pizzeria in a bustling college town is a whole different game. With lines out the door until 3 or 4 AM, Peter describes the experience as “just different moments of insanity,” as students flood in post-bar rush, making Joe’s a rite of passage for Michigan newcomers.
Beyond serving slices, Joe’s Pizza has embedded its impact into the Ann Arbor community, partnering with local charities like Mott Children’s Hospital. “We fundraise for them, we bring pizzas, and create other sorts of promotions where a percentage of the sales will go to them,” Peter explains.
