From rivals to partners: The journey behind Pizzata Pizzeria

Pizzata Pizzeria, located in Philadelphia, PA, was founded by Davide Lubrano Lavadera, Ciro Lubrano Lavadera, and Vinny Gallagher. In Italy, a “pizzata” is a celebration of food and community. That spirit defines Pizzata Pizzeria.

The trio’s story began in an unexpected place — a pizza competition. As Vinny nervously prepared to showcase his pizza-making skills, Ciro wandered over, inspected his dough, and playfully poked at it. Ciro declared that Vinny was going to win. And he was right. What could have ended as a simple handshake between pizza competitors became the foundation of friendship and a business partnership.

For the Lubrano Lavadera brothers, pizza is in their DNA. Growing up between Italy and the U.S., their father owned pizza shops, making the restaurant world a second home. As Ciro says, “I feel more comfortable within the restaurant walls than outside them.”

Meanwhile, Davide’s training at the Roman Pizza Academy brought an edge of innovation and expertise, blending seamlessly with Vinny’s skills. Together, they’ve created the perfect recipe for success.

You won’t find a menu tailored to personal preferences. The team focuses on delivering their best every time. “We draw a strict line on standards,” Davide shares. From imported Italian ingredients to their not-so-sour dough crust, Pizzata stays true to quality. Pineapple and ranch? Those are fine — as long as they’re on the side.

From break-ins and fires to navigating the pandemic, obstacles are par for the course in the restaurant world. But for Davide, Ciro, and Vinny, these moments are opportunities for growth.“You find out who you are,” Vinny shares. “You have to be a little sick to love this job.” It’s this relentless passion and resilience that keeps them going.

So the next time you’re competing in your craft, take a moment to look around. You might not find a rival, but an opportunity.
