Jocelyn Volpe’s journey of love, loss, and legacy
Napoli’s Pizza is more than a pizza shop; it’s a cornerstone of the Hoboken community. For over 13 years, Napoli’s has served as a gathering place for first dates, family dinners, and celebrations of life’s big and small moments. At the heart of Napoli’s is Jocelyn Volpe, whose story is one of resilience, love, and unyielding dedication.
Jocelyn’s late husband, Frank Volpe, was the visionary behind Napoli’s. Growing up in the family that owned the first pizza shop in NYC, Lombardi’s, Frank wanted to pave his own path. Jocelyn spoke to Frank’s character saying, “You really need love and passion to be in this game. The restaurant industry is a tough business because it's so demanding and you have to make a lot of sacrifices. He liked to cheer people up.”
Jocelyn and Frank’s journey began in the restaurant world. As a waitress at Applebee’s, Jocelyn served Frank and his friends weekly, never imagining they’d reconnect years later and build a life together. After marrying, Jocelyn left her career in law and real estate to join Frank in the pizza business.
The pandemic presented challenges for businesses worldwide, but for Jocelyn, it also brought profound personal loss. In January 2021, Frank became sick with COVID-19 and tragically passed away after a two-month battle. Despite the immense grief, Jocelyn found strength in her husband’s vision and dedication. “This is much more than a restaurant,” she reflects. “It’s my husband’s life.”
Jocelyn channels Frank’s entrepreneurial spirit as she navigates the challenges of running two locations in an unpredictable economy. Balancing inflation, equipment breakdowns, and daily operations is no easy feat, but Jocelyn draws on her deep faith and the love she feels from her community. “I know Frank would tell me to keep going,” she says.
Napoli’s is not just a business; it’s a part of Hoboken’s fabric. Jocelyn supports local schools and events, often donating to causes that inspire young people. Her commitment to the community is mirrored by her customers’ loyalty, many of whom have been dining at Napoli’s since the beginning.
Jocelyn’s wisdom for aspiring business owners is simple yet profound: “Don’t let fear stop you.” She believes in being your own cheerleader and pushing forward, no matter how daunting the obstacles. “You have to find strength from within.”
Napoli’s isn’t just a pizzeria; it’s a home away from home. And for Jocelyn, it’s where she feels closest to Frank, ensuring his dream lives on in every slice served.
