The importance of creating a third space
A third space refers to a social environment that’s distinct from the two primary spaces where people spend most of their time: home and work/school. It’s where people gather to relax, connect, and build community outside of those settings like a coffee shop, park, or, in this case, a pizza shop.
At Lazy Moon Pizza, it’s not just about massive slices and craft beer, it’s about making people feel at home. I recently sat down with Tim Brown, one of the founders of Lazy Moon, to hear how his vision for a laid-back, social vibe has shaped one of Central Florida’s most beloved pizza spots.
Lazy Moon’s journey began back in 2004, near the University of Central Florida. Tim and his team were pulling 21-hour days in the beginning — literally living at the shop, with a hammock strung across the office for quick naps. Despite the grind, Tim embraced a “failure is not an option” mindset, which carried them through those challenging early months. His advice? Learn from others, observe what works, and find ways to improve along the way.
